Calvary Lutheran celebrated with great joy its 50th anniversary in 2003. As a mission congregation, there were moments of great wonder of how Calvary would move into the future. However, from the very beginning this little mission congregation was prepared and determined to grow as the leaders of the congregation envisioned a three-phase building project. The words "There is a place for you at Calvary" became the slogan that echoed throughout the sanctuary and within the community. There was something about Calvary that ignited people as church membership grew from 169 individuals in 1954 to over 2,200 by 1965. With rapid growth, Calvary's three-phase building project soon became a necessity. The celebration of its tenth year anniversary carried with it the theme, "We Dare to Dream." Calvary's history is one of dreaming, envisioning, and wonder as the congregation continues to explore different ways of expressing one's faith. Calvary is a healthy church primarily because the laity and staff are willing to explore new frontiers. Calvary seeks to grow in many areas. Our core values name and describe these areas. Calvary hopes to develop in Word and Sacrament Ministry, Outreach, Youth Development, Empowering People's Gifts, Congregationally Owned Ministry, and Personal Growth. Calvary continues to draw from its heritage as the leaders, in conjunction with the congregation, have recently adopted a new mission statement. This new statement sends us out to "serve and ignite people for Christ" in the community of Grand Forks and beyond. If history is a factor, we will continue to dream dreams and see visions of the possibilities of calling people to this place called. Calvary. |
